Min flow = 600cfs
Don't under-estimate this river, there have been many serious injuries on all the main rapids including Split Hair, Judy's Hole, Dunbar Brook, False Tooth, Dragons Tooth and Labrynth. Most of these required rescue by emergency personnel and surgery. Almost all injuries happened to kayakers who did not have a rock solid roll and were injured after doing a wet exit. Don't be next, if you don't have a never failing roll don't paddle this river!

TVA Apalachia Powerhouse (11am-7pm 2 turbines) Lower section, class II 5.8 miles containing 5 class II & one II+ rapids Min = 2900 cfs, aka - 2 turbines running means mostly boney rapids with a fair amount of scraping bottom and even some rapids that are hard to find enough water to float thru.At this level ideal for new paddlers. This would be a great run with about 3500+ cfs.

To check for sufficient water (400cfs) to paddle this river add the USGS Gauge Reading to the Planned Generation Discharge then apply the result to the scale that follows.
Be sure to use the "Previous Page" link on the KCCNY site to move back & forth.
400 cfs min flow for a paddle
750-1500 CFS - Generally accepted good level. 6-8 good wave trains, eddies and ferries.
2500+ CFS - Feels like class 3, Fast moving mostly flat water and longer swim potential.
Good river reading required to avoid a trashing in the few remaining river features.
Whitewater Releases 10am-3pm normally 1200cfs

Whitewater releases from Savage River Dam are normally sponsored by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Adventure Sports International in cooperation with the Upper Potomac River Commission.

Please note, there is no camping inside the park and no shuttle service.
